Stock MY01 Rex generate around 90kW at
the wheels (from a 160kW claimed engine output), whereas the APS-tinkered
version boasts a figure of 161 kW at the wheels (or 240kW at the fly),
at around 4000rpm with 17psi boost dialled in. That’s nearly double
the mumbo.
After a cruise through the impressive
Bayswater facility and a full brief on the newly-completed test and development
machine, we headed out into the Victorian countryside to
put the puppy through its paces.
APS supremo Peter Luxon took the time to map out a widely varying
and challenging route to demonstrate the vast range and useability of the
upgraded Rex, and probably regrettably, decided he’d come along for the
ride. And what a ride it was.
Of course any performance institution will
claim to have the ultimate package, but the fact Peter owns (and has owned)
some of the most desirable exotics on the planet, including a quiver of
rare Porsches, and still rates the Rex as the ultimate bang for your buck,
is testament to the value of the little street brawler.
It absolutely pissed down the entire time
we were in Melbourne, must’ve just been unlucky, I guess. So while
we weren’t expecting any overheating problems, we were certainly expecting
to get an accurate assessment of the car’s ability to transfer its new-found
enthusiasm to the slippery tarmac.
