APS R Series Front Mount Intercooler
Temperature and Pressure Drop

R Series

In the case of intercooling, where bigger is better, APS shoehorned the largest intercooler core possible into the WRX (whilst still retaining the driving lights!) for maximum cooling capacity and engine performance.

Intercooler performance can be measured by how much energy (temperature) the intercooler can remove from the inlet charge air and what pressure drop is seen through the entire system. It is important to consider the entire intercooler system and not simply the intercooler core itself.

The following chart contains information gathered during one of APS durability testing days at Calder Raceway. Testing was performed on a heavily modified WRX using a prototype turbocharger running extreme boost levels with very high charge air turbo temperatures..

The chart shows turbo outlet temperatures of over 180 deg C are cooled to 50 deg C at the inlet manifold (massive 130 deg C drop in temperature) under race conditions. These are outstanding performance results.

Also outstanding was the minimal pressure drop across the entire intercooler system. At 7,000 rpm with 25 psi of boost and huge volume through the large turbocharger, the pressure difference measured was an excellent 1 psi across the entire intercooler system (not just the core).

Truly outstanding intercooling performance for powerful engine performance and improved durability.
