MY98 Unichip ECU Evaluation

Note: Michael's comments are in italics.

Power & Torque

In standard form, Mike's car gets just on 100kw at the wheels. With the Unichip aboard, the peak power is lifted to 113kw. The tractive effort peaks at 3200N at 3200 rpm. The power gains across the rpm range are around 15kw.

Parameter Snapshot

Fuel Economy

Mike covered 1457km with an average return of 13.74 L/100km.

"Fuel economy was excellent. I ended up achieving about the same figures I get out of the standard ECU. The Unichip offered more power and more torque with the same or better consumption. Excellent ! Those who may be more conscious of their fuel economy may well want to consider the Unichip for this reason alone. The ECU allowed the car to run a lot more efficiently than in standard form. I am sure that if more conservatively driven, the car may well have achieved much better figures"

Acceleration Times

Mike averaged 5.59secs to the 100 and 14.05secs at 159.3km/hr for the 400m.

Cold Start Operation

"Cold start was as good as standard. The morning ambient temps would not have fallen below 10 degrees, and it started first time, every time."

Customer Service

"I arrived at APS on a very busy morning and had to wait a considerable period of time before being able to talk with Peter. I was not told how long it would take, not allowed to view my car being tuned, nor received an explanation as to why not. To his credit Peter was most apologetic and made all offers in attempt to reconcile the situation. I have since met with Peter on numerous occasions post installation and can qualify that my initial experience was definitely not the norm. Similarly, the functionality of the vehicle post fitment was perfect with all factory controls and systems operating as required."

Driveability - Boost Control Module

"The extra power (& torque) was very noticeable and useable across the bulk of the rev range with the increase in torque providing an amazing seat of the pants feeling throughout the lower rev range. With the appropriate gear engaged, the car would accelerate hard from 2500rpm and come to life extremely fast. The standard car felt a lot more sluggish in comparison. The difference in torque was less noticeable in the higher RPM range (>5000rpm).

The overall driveability was excellent. Power delivery was consistent and smooth. I liked the fact it did not have to be kept above a certain rpm figure to keep it in its sweet spot. Quite honestly, it provided remarkably smooth and consistent power across the board. In summary - buy one. I know I am seriously considering it !"
